NEC Provides Non-Disruptive Failover for Virtualization Systems

Enabled through NEC’s EXPRESSCLUSTER X high availability software

NEW DELHI, India - 07 September 2010 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the launch of global sales promotions for the “EXPRESSCLUSTER X 3.0 Series” on October 1, 2010 that enables a non-disruptive failover (*1) for virtualization systems.

EXPRESSCLUSTER X is the core of NEC’s EXPRESSCLUSTER product line, which holds top share (*2) in the Asia Pacific region’s high availability software market. This software enables the provision of highly reliable, low cost systems by observing system operations, detecting failures and automatically transferring operations to a standby server that continues to carry out application workloads.

This EXPRESSCLUSTER X 3.0 Series newly supports non-disruptive failover for virtual machines (*3) through reinforced linking functions with virtualization software. Moreover, the time required to initially synchronize data between the active server and the standby server has been significantly reduced, in addition to usability improvements in the graphical user interface (GUI).

The software’s main features are as follows:

(1) Supports Non-disruptive Failover for Virtualization Systems

Non-disruptive failover for virtual machines is made possible through coordination with virtualization software. Operations can quickly resume in the event of a failure thanks to the new EXPRESSCLUSTER software, which enables application workloads on virtual machines to restart activity in the same position as just prior to a failure.

(2) Accelerated Data Synchronization

Data synchronization has been significantly accelerated between active servers and standby servers during both a system’s initial implementation and its recovery from a failure. This new function, which synchronizes only the actual data on a disk, can complete synchronization of a 1000 GB disk in approximately 10 minutes (*4) from initial implementation. Existing technologies require approximately 1,000 minutes to carry out the same task.

(3) Improved Management Interface

In terms of settings, selections automatically appear on screen following the input of a minimum amount of information by the user, which enables settings to be easily selected during the system’s initial implementation. Furthermore, the management screen’s graphic user interface (GUI) has been improved for greater usability.
