Speed limit on Bruce Highway reduced at Isis River Bridge
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said a speed review undertaken by the department had determined a speed reduction would help to reduce the number and severity of crashes in the area.
“The safety of all road users is the Bligh Government’s top priority, which is why the speed limit will be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h on this section of highway,” Mr Wallace said.
“The review considered a variety of factors including road function, prevailing measured traffic speed, the speed environment and crash history.
“This safety initiative will help to reduce crashes on this important road which carries about 7,200 vehicles per day.”
Mr Wallace urged all motorists to look out for the new speed signs and be aware of the changed speed limit. He also reminded motorists that the reduced speed limit would be enforced.
“There will also be warning signs, advising motorists they are entering a high-crash zone before the reduced speed section,” Mr Wallace said.
His decision to reduce the speed limit follows a number of recent crashes at the Isis River Bridge and feedback from the community.
“Funding has been allocated in the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ 2009-10 to 2013-14 Roads Implementation Program to undertake planning for a higher and wider bridge and improved approaches,” Mr Wallace said.
“Planning is currently underway however the actual construction of the replacement bridge will be subject to available federal funding and timing is yet to be determined.
“My department is committed to a safe road network and reducing the speed at this location will be an interim measure to improve safety until the bridge can be replaced.
“The State Government is continuing to work closely with the Federal Government to secure funding for upgrades on various sections of the Bruce Highway, including the replacement of the Isis River Bridge.”
